Of the skeletal shapes of the human body, perhaps my favorite is the pelvis. The arc, the turns, the angles and its bowl-like characteristic have long interested the artistic side of me. The pelvis houses both the creative force of life, and through elimination, the force of death. Bio-mechanically, next to the brain, the pelvis is the most important body zone for walking. You can walk without legs but not without a pelvis.
I decided to start anew, to strip away what I had been taught.
―Georgia O’Keeffe
Many years ago I offered a Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement® series for the employees of a hospital. The giggles received from a group of clinicians, in response to the series title, The Power of the Pelvis, rather surprised and amused me. In a similar vein, a few years later, a physician attending my classes for low back pain joked week after week that he just didn’t know where his pelvis was. One week, he humorously commented that while it was apparent that I was trying to trick him into discovering his pelvis, at that point, he still didn’t have a clue. Someone else in the group queried with a bit of exasperation, “Aren’t you a doctor?”
Alas, knowing and Knowing are two different things.
Sun-bleached bones were most wonderful against the blue—that blue that will always be there as it is now after all man’s destruction is finished. ―Georgia O’Keeffe
And the difference between to Know and Knowing is perhaps even more vast. In our programs, we specialize in the process of Knowing. This past year, I dedicated some time to exploring my own pelvis through movement, meditation and creative writing. After 15 years of somatic studies, I have barely scratched the surface of Knowing. Consider Knowing the pelvis, specifically your own pelvis…and even take a walk on the wild side and ponder the impact on the world around you through something so intimate and personal.
